Getting Started

Hello and welcome to Newhaven Gig Rowing Club. The following information will guide you through the sign-up process and get you out enjoying the beautiful River Ouse estuary in one of our lovely Cornish pilot gigs.

Step 1: PARQ Form

As a club we make your safety our number one priority and as such we will require some information from you to facilitate your registration and to ensure that you can enjoy the benefits of rowing with us in a safe, friendly and enjoyable environment. Rest assured we will treat your personal information with respect and confidentiality adhering to the latest GDPR data protection guidelines.

If you are under 16 and applying for a Junior membership we will need your parent or guardian to countersign.  Once submitted the form needs to be checked which may take a few days so please be patient!

Step 2: Sign-Up

Now go to the website sign-up page here.

  1. Select the 'Beginner Membership' option and complete all sections of the online form. This will set up your online membership which will allow you to use our online booking system to manage your rowing activities. All new members must complete the 'beginner' sessions even if you have rowed before elsewhere.
  2. Once this has been done, log into the website using your newly created username and password and go to the 'Book a Row' page where you can find the events calendar. Here you will find details of event dates and times.
  3. Look for 'Sweep Stroke and Maiden Voyage' session and click on the event to then request a seat on this session. The Sweep Stroke' part of the session will teach you everything you need to know to get started and the Maiden Voyage will be your first proper row, putting those newly learnt techniques into practice. You will receive an email when your request is confirmed by your Cox. These rows are free to book.

Occasionally sessions have to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions including high winds – your Cox advise you of an cancellations as soon as possible and will do their best to help you find a place on another upcoming session if this happens.

On the Day

On the day of your Sweep Stroke and Maiden Voyage session, arrive at the Marina in Newhaven about 10 minutes before your session is due to start. You can park your car if necessary at the Marina then meet your cox at the red arrow/entrance to the pontoon walkway. Your cox will then take you and the rest of your crew to the mooring (yellow circle).

Address: Newhaven Marina, Yacht Harbour, Newhaven BN9 9BY

What to Wear and What to Bring

Please wear layers and dress for the weather.  We advise you not to wear jeans but comfortable sportswear and trainers. Please bring plenty of water to drink and sun cream/sunglasses/waterproofs/sun or woolly hat etc as necessary.

There is a dry repository on the boat in which you can put your phone and keys.

Step 3: Upgrade to Novice

Once you have completed your sweep stroke and maiden voyage session you can apply to upgrade your membership to a 'Novice' on the Memberships page.

This is a free upgrade and gives you access to our learn to row sessions where you can continue to develop your skills before progressing onto the more competent open rows or even join our race teams.

Step 4: Access your Row Dough Wallet

This is an online wallet that is used to pay for your sessions when you book online and can be found here.

Credit needs to be added to the wallet to allow you to book on rows. The minimum deposit is £5.00 and your row fees will be deducted from this.

Step 5: Access the Events Page and Book onto ‘Learn to Row’ Sessions

You will now continue on ‘Learn to Row’ sessions until you are deemed competent by a cox. They will advise you when this is case.

If you have any problems completing any of the above then contact us on and we will be happy to guide you through the process.
